How to Make an American Flag Cake
What's a July 4th party without an American flag cake? Serve a traditional flag cake or an American flag pie for dessert to give guests a patriotic treat that is both festive and delicious. The American flag cake recipe below is both light and very easy to make. Kids love to help make American flag cakes so save the fruit stars and stripes for them!
American Flag Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsps vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 3/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- Cool whip or white frosting
- Strawberries, washed and sliced
- Blueberries, washed
Directions:
Begin by baking a delicious, light, and fluffy white cake. Preheat the oven to 350F. Cream together the butter and sugar, and then beat in the eggs and vanilla extract. Mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl and then gradually add to the cream mixture. Slowly mix in the milk. Pour the batter into a greased 9x9in pan and bake 30-40 minutes. Cake is done when a toothpick comes out clean.
Once the cake is baked and has fully cooled, decorate it to make it look like an American flag. Use the sliced strawberries or raspberries to make “stripes” horizontally across the cake and use the blueberries to make “stars” in the top left corner of the American flag cake. An alternative is to use frosting, like the American flag cake pictured below. Frost the top of the cake with red icing, and then use pieces of fondant frosting for the stripes. Use a pastry piping bag to create the blue and stars. Add sparklers for extra effect!
If you really want to get it right, the American flag has 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes for a total of 13 stripes representing each of the thirteen original colonies, as well as 50 stars representing each of the 50 states.
