A Seussical Birthday Party

A Dr. Seuss birthday party is great for a kid’s birthday party. It’s a lot of fun to plan and put together, and the kids will definitely enjoy a Dr. Seuss birthday theme!

The great thing about a Dr. Seuss birthday is that there are so many books from which to get ideas. Focus on one book in particular or seek inspiration from multiple Dr. Seuss books. To get started, check out these Dr. Seuss birthday party ideas for your party:

  • Decorations: To create a Dr. Seuss-like setting, use lots of bright colors and shapes. Red and blue balloons and streamers can be hung from the ceiling as well as from white light fixtures. For table center pieces, fill up jars full with brightly colored candies such as skittles. Place various Dr. Seuss books on tables throughout the party for guests to read and enjoy while they are there.
  • Menu: Food and drink for a Dr. Seuss birthday should match the spirit of the books—playful as can be! Create dishes with fun names like “Cat in the Hat Caprese,” “Green Eggs and Ham” or “Horton’s Peanut Butter Sandwich.” Get creative! You can type or print beautiful title cards and place them next to the dishes for a buffet-style meal. For Dr. Seuss birthday cakes, think color! Food coloring will definitely come in handy here. Create cakes stacked high with different, brightly colored layers. Lightly-colored cakes, like vanilla, lemon or white cake are best to use if you plan to use food coloring. A funfetti cake is also easy to make and will go very well with the theme (you can buy this at any grocery store). You can also order a cake topped with beautiful Dr. Seuss characters made out of icing or marzipan. Do you want to bake cupcakes instead? Top delicious cupcakes with alternating red and white candies. No matter which dessert you decide to make, the kids will love it!
  • Activities: Dr. Seuss birthday activities can range from games to readings. A fun activity for the kids to do during the party is to have a Cat in the Hat decorating contest. Have a table set up for the kids to create their own uniquely decorated hats using craft supplies like markers, glitter, tissue paper, ribbon and feathers. Then, have them put on a fashion show! You can award prizes for silly categories such as “Most Glitter Glue,” etc. Another idea is to read some Dr. Seuss stories out loud to the guests. Or, have the kids take over and perform their own versions of their favorite stories!

These are a few ideas to get you going on the right track. For more Dr. Seuss birthday ideas, reread your favorite childhood Dr. Seuss stories!
